A common and sometimes abundant species occurring throughout England and Scotland, over the last century it has increased in abundance in many places in the U.K.

The bronzy green to black elytra bear numerous narrow ridges and each elytron has three rows of small pits. The margins are violet or coppery.

They are flightless and mostly nocturnal in habits although very occasionally active in sunshine.

The female is less shiny and slightly less domed than the male.

Prey includes slugs and snails, woodlice, millipedes and centipedes. Adults are active from early spring, breed in the summer, and persist into the autumn.
